It was started last night around 7 pm, one of my friend, a fisherman called me on my cellphone then he was insist me to join him for fishing the next day. Because he just found a place where all the GTs are scholing, it was a sudden short notice. Then called a friend to join us for this fishing spots explorations.

Then i called him again asking what kind of fishing there. he answered, live baiting. Then confirmed that we are going to meet at the beach the next dawn to fish for bait using his fishing boat, the live baiting will use tamban fish / Clupeichthys goniognathus / sarden fish / http://fishbase.org/Summary/SpeciesSummary.php?id=1569

We leave then at 5:30 leaving beach heading to where the sarde fish is. soon we caught some 40 fishes, put them in the live bait tanks and off we go to the fishing spots.

OK,
we loered down 4 rigs at 9::00am, we have our b’fast there while waiting fish bit our baits. 9:30 frind said, at 10:00am they will start bitting, look all my fisherman friends are gathereing here. That is correct, we saw like 7 small boat toward us, then they anchoring and lowered down the same bait.

10 am, the far left fisherman start the first strike !!, then my friend said, get ready, Not even 2 minutes after that we had double strike, my rods and his. then in 5 minutes after,the rods at the other side of the small boat are screaming. we lowered down again our baits, cranking fews so the bait and the weight around a meter from the seabed. not even one minutes !! strike . then strike again the rods next to me,a gain and again.

Then i initiate tio use my 16lbs mono line instead of pe 5 tuffline XP. on 16 lbs will be great fight. start making the rig, using live shrimp as bait, i lowered down my lightest tackle i carry today. actually i brought even smaller one, but looking at the size of the GT, all over 5 kilos (12pounds), better try the 16 lbs first.

Lowered down my rig …. a minutes, 2 minutes, not strike yet. then a Triple strikes !!!!
My shimano Navi PG on tuffline XP PE-5 strikes, my Shimano Alivio on 16 lbs toplon mono also, and one more a shimano navi PG on mono sufix line all triple strike. This is confusing !!! my left hand on the 16 lbs, my right hand on 50 lbs. i decided to get the 50 lbs first with hoping that the fight can be finished quick and then move to the 16lbs line. but the fight didnt take long, after few minutes, the line break !! On leader.
The other 16 lbs line has been handled by other anglers, so great to see the rod bended forming ‘U’ letter, around 5 minutes he finished the fight and then the GTs around 5.5 kilos were landed onboard.

Again i place live shrimp as the baits, and again, strike !!! this one i finished my self, slowly but sure the GT appears, landed and it was a 7 kilos GT, not bad for a 16lbs line !!!

Total that day, we have like 40-50 strikes, because we have like 40 live baits minus 4 death. and shrimp. those only within 2 hours 10:00am to 12 o’clock. after 12 we headed back to shore that me has apppointment to attend.

Total that day:

GT Landed 22 or 23 fishes. weight 5 - 8.5 kilos (12lbs - 18.5lbs)
Line breaks, me 2 + Mr J 2 + Mr Y 6 + Mr M 0 = 10 line break
Missed after hooked: Me 4 or 5, Mr Y 5, Mr Y 8, Mr M 7 = total 25 times
We bring back only 5, rest were released and the fisherman carry some as us.

GREAT DAY!! Half day with full of strikes!!

Few weeks ago,
we decided to test new spot that a friend found earlier,
left the shora at 1:00 pm that the tide will be at its peak at 1:30 we are looking for low water and current.
at the spots around 20 minutes later, on a bali traditional local boats we were, that has 2 outrigger as balancing buoys.

We prepared our 500 grams modified jigs yellow-red color GID - glow in the dark,
Drop the jig into the 120 meters depth water, and start playing the lure.
it doesnt take long to get our first strike. on the 15th stroke we had a strike !!

the fish start to fight back, trying to getaway from our shout hooks #11,
but after around 8 minutes the fish were landed, its a Ruby snapper 9 - 10 kilos.
take a break a bit, then we started to jig again, this time on bright yellow jig, with modified rubber squid tail on the hooks.
again, 2nd strike doesnt take long, this one the same ruby snapper but bigger, a 13 kilos landed. total that day, we got 4 9-13kilos ruby and a small 4 kilos ruby snapper, and a mackerel on trolling on the way back. this mackerel were slashed by marlin that we saw jumped, but seems missed.

at 5 pm we went back to the shore, the ride back were rough and rain. when fishing weather are cloudly already. but even we were wet, this was a great trip.

All set we went onboard at around 10:30, all check, good to go, we start cruising to the first destination at this trip, popping for GT. AT hollow rock at Penida area, I show them how to use and send the poppers, first throw…. around 70 meters, strong current, start retrieving the lure that floats perfectly with the hook on the tail 1 number bigger than the one on the belly.

Then its a sudden strike, captain saw the fish juped and hit the lure, try to hook up perfectly, fish trying to run away and … no luck, first strike fish able to released itself from the owner hooks.

Then lets try again,
we popping there at the are and moved to the rocky contour for 2 hours. no luck yet.

Then we decided to troll, lure set up, on exactly 8 knots by GPS reading, we start to troll, we chat aboout many things with this couple that fished with us that day. then strike !!! he grabbed that shimano TLLD 50 double seed and start cranking, a small tuna caught.

Set up the troll again heading jigging spot, agai strike, this one bigger, we cleared up the other lure and when we retrieve the lure, another strike !! double strike, both penn and shimano TLD now got fish at the end of the line. when landed, its a medium mackerel and small mackerel, seems like we troll thru the ackerel scholl.

Then we cleared up all and prepare for the jigging. all trolling gear cleared, and we directly to the sppot on cruising 20-22 knots. very soon we are at the spots. Then again i showed them how to jig.
Lower the 500 grams yellow GID glow in thedark jig deep into the waters, a 120 meters depth by the sounder/sonar reading. shake retrive shake retrie, They start to understand, then when i still hold the rods and doing the 2 jig drops, it became so heavy, one beast down there pull the PE-5 on our ryobi spinning reels so quick, i have the crew to wear the guest harness, and he’s ready for the rods, i transfered the rods to him, he is a big guy, and start holding the rods, still the fish running like a jumbo jet !!, 300 meters of PE-5 almost ran out ! we can see the bottom of the spool, i ordered to chase the line, we chased the line, then fish stop, he cranked the powerpro pe line then slowly slowly, around 100 meters reeled in.
then sudenly, this fish really pissed off, it swam again so fast !! again he has to cranking in the 100 meters that already into  the spool. the boat chased the fish here and there here and there like crazy. finally after 20 minutes of high gear chasing, it broke on the leader. man !! wat a day.

the giest are jigging again, now he himself got a strike, figh a sec, the snap clip broke !!!!
Damn, even the best strongest braided line only as weak as its swivel. We are all exhausted of the first strike tha we estimate over 50 kilos weight of fish.

got a little more jigging, and we headed back to the marina. What a day.. at the office we stil talking about the ’sub-marine’ we jiged just then. what a day …..

Last week we have a fellow anglers fish with us at komodo, It was such a short notice before the groups went ou for fishing with us, but finally all clear up and they were start fishing

Lately, staffs at Labuan Bajo inform our Bali office that they did not carry the proper gear to fish in Komodo, staff said that the gear they are carry was too small. Though in the previous call with the anglers mentioned that they have their proper gear to fish in komodo as we mentioned in the website.

Though fishing trip went well, i aint satisfy enough with the trip. that they did not experience the maximum achievement of the komodo fishing trips.

This is the reasons why we make this Komodo fishing blog, to update the information and the fishing conditions in comodo. Those above also why us like to talk or interviews with the agler going to komodo about the gears and everything whether by email or by phone.

so let us list some of the gears that may as minimum requirement for fishing in Komodo. We are mostly experienced with Shimano’s tackle, but any other that similar or in the same clas with the mentioned below will be a good one too, either Daiwa band, penn, or okuma.

Pack up your proper gear to assure your fishing trip will be succesful & you can experience the maximum of Fishing Komodo !!
Most of this you can order/buy at www.johnsportfishing.com and have them delivered to komodo before your fishing date, and you can bring them back to your country for your next trip.

Lures / Poppers
Get the good peformance popper, that floats well, and can produce the water slash when it plays or retrieve.
There are several kinds of popper; Chugger, which creates most water splashes, Wind Breakers, that you can use for the high wind conditions. Mostly , those two will fit most of the sea conditions.
Lure weight should be matched with your gear, when you are using 100 grams lure wieight rod class, you still can use the 80grams popper and to 120 grams, as wella s it is on 150 grams. I myself prefer the 80-100 grams popper, that will not drain my power too fast.
Good combinations of lures and rods will produce a long cast and less power to cast it while easier to play with the lure. Some of the best rods are Sevenseas and Carpenter rods.

Reels
Reels should be able to stop the power of those GT from running away with your line and poppers/lure. It should at least has 11 kgs drag on the reels. the cheapest you can get from shimano is SHimano Navi 8000PG can stop medium GT, the Daiwa Freams J i heard also good. It should loaded with PE5/50lbs or PE6 line class. Shimano Stella 10.000 / 16.000 / 20.000 loaded with PE6 or PE8 will be the best. Daiwa saltiga dogfight will also be good.

LINE
Aint no good for filling the spool with Mono FIlamen, becaue it will strecth when you play with the lures, PE /Braided line use is almost a must. PE 6 - 60 lbs class, to PE8 or PE 10 is best for tis applications.

Rods,
2 pieces with the join at the end of the rods but is best. Do not use the middle rods join, it will break. Rod length should be around 8′6″ in order to cast farther then the lure will be on water longer if you cast farther. the chance to play it longer and able to attract the fish longer.

Hooks,
Treble Hooks of owner / is good. for better performance use 1 number bigger to place at the tail of the popper than the one at the popper’s belly. Since its a Catch and release fishing tour for GT, barbless hooks are recomended, you can un barb the hook using pliers.
